This Week: Five Things That Caught My Eye
Yes, it’s September, but if summer reigns supreme in your household like it does in mine, there’s no need to let go of the season just yet.
A quick hit roundup of what’s on my plate, mind and spirit right now.
My measuring stick for summer is the tomato season. Wishbone Kitchen has a delicious sungold pasta recipe that held me down these last few months, and I highly recommend investing in bronze cut pasta (I went with Marulo bucatini). Consider using an immersion blender directly in the pot to cut back on dishes and gently break down the sauce. I added grilled shrimp, corn, kale and local feta to my last batch and it was divineeee. If you’re local to NYC, then you’ve got the rest of the month (at least!) to try Radio Bakery’s absolutely delicious heirloom tomato tart. They tend to run out early on the weekends, so plan accordingly!
I recently started the podcast “The Master,” which is a deep dive into the sexual assault allegations against powerhouse author Neil Gaiman. I have some reservations about their approach, but I came across it via the always sharp Maris Kreizman who has a great summation of accusations and rightly wonders why nothing more comprehensive has yet to break into mainstream media. Related: This horrific case of a woman in France being drugged by her husband and raped by as many as fifty strangers (many of who said they believed her husband could consent for her) and “Consent,” Jill Ciment’s extraordinary memoir about her relationship with her much older art teacher, which Parul notes “unravel(s) the story to keep it going—ghosts unsure about their next destination.”
Bee Shots: Oranges, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, coconut water and everything else you need to steady yourself for the season to come.
I’ve got my eye on the new collection from Uniqlo’s newly appointed creative director, Clare Waight Keller. Loving the airy shapes like this oversized puffer and this shirt dress. Still figuring out my fall look, but so far I’m leaning towards crisp lines, staples/classics and puddles of decadent fabric.
Alligator Bites Never Heal: I’ve been enamored with Doechii ever since I saw her perform at an afterparty for Lauren Halsey. Her new EP feels as stealth as the titular reptile, all coiled swampcore, a promise of what she can do. Her quiet power is hypnotic, and I love the nods to 90s hip-hop and somatic processing.
