"Being Instagram-unworthy in the name of care, communal experiences and power sharing/building, which we all desperately need."

Thank you for writing this. Even when I do Instagram-worthy things, I often don't want to post them, and I've finally decided that not wanting to is a sufficient reason to not. I had to ask myself: When did I start feeling obligated to post things? After nearly two decades of being very visible online, I'm just not into it anymore.

Your post reminded me of the time in 2023 when I was the Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi, and during the three-day Oxford Conference for the Book, I made the Grisham House (my private residence at the time) the site of the unofficial conference after-party for the Black and Brown writers, every evening. The first night, I made black-eyed pea chili and cornbread. It was de-fucking-licious, and I'm sitting here trying figure out why I haven't made it since.

I’m obsessed with watching 72 hours on NHK - they stay in one location (a grocery store, a dry cleaner, or library for example) somewhere in Japan for…72 hours and interview the people that go there. I find the show to be so calming, so human, and I usually laugh and cry. All in 30 minutes! Highly recommend: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/72hours/

Love these! I’ve really loved cooking from Hailee Catalano’s newly released debut cookbook, By Heart! The recipes are so simple to follow, great for a crowd, and have a different element (be it spice or technique) that levels it up in an exciting way!!

Also I saved all the Abbott Elementary episodes for this season and wow what a delight that show is!!

Yes, you should watch Andor! I am not a Star Wars fan, and I don't know any lore. But it's genuinely thrilling to see media that attempts to honestly reckon with revolutionary politics – and the show has so many fascinating analogs to Ireland during the Troubles, South Africa during Apartheid, Palestine since 1948, indigenous histories across the world, etc.

Cheap eats all the way. Been scaling it back and down for all the reasons and it’s been soothing to see how little is needed for flavor and sustenance.

Also I can’t stop thinking about the laptop harness. It’s jarring every time.

Freaked out, hooked, and in - I’m right there with you on Murata. I tore though Convenience Store Woman after the Batuman profile rattled me, and now I’m semi-shocked and disturbed by Vanishing World. She’s spectacularly weird and wild and funny and unsettling.
