It was also a hurricane that triggered my interest in prepping, though I can't remember just which one. We get them just about every year here, especially these days. I've been learning what I can since the '90's, and other folks' stories never cease to fascinate me.
My hubs is a long time prepper and after a recent climate disaster we lived through I’m revisiting some old lessons he taught me. Like having a bug out bag. I made my list by candlelight in the midst of our emergency and now want to actually pack my bag.
Since our experience in addition to continuing his herbal medic training, he’s also joined our local search and rescue volunteer group. We felt so helpless in the immediate wake of the disaster and want to do better next time.
For reading - this is going to sound bananas but a book I got a lot out of on this tip was 1 Second After. It comes from a weird context (Newt Gingrich!) but worth the read imo
Thank you for this, and the NYT piece. I have spent time thinking about survival skills and plans before but haven't dedicated any practice to it. I'm curious about how you maintain the skills you're learning, beyond this trip. How does what you're learning change your daily life?
